Great Expectations

Posted on October 29, 2016 at 7:40 AM

No, this isn't a book report on Dicken's famous novel, but there will probably be a few references to it in this post . . . This morning I did something I haven't done for a very long time.  I sat on our front porch, which faces due East, and watched the sunrise.  Our property has several trees that partially obstruct the view of our neighbor's pasture and pond across the road, but their dark silouette against the light and colors of the sky behind them provide a stark contrast that...

Hard times are coming

Posted on October 23, 2016 at 10:30 AM

Can you feel it coming?  Do you see it in the faces of those you meet everyday?  Does it affect your sleep, your daily mood, your peace and joy? If you know what I'm talking about, then you share a duty with the rest of us who are "awake" to send forth one last ditch effort to wake others up too.  Hard times are coming, no matter who wins the election, and we all need to be prepared.

Several years ago, I used to exert a great amount of effort into trying to w...

God brings us full circle

Posted on October 17, 2016 at 8:50 PM

The western edge of our property adjoins acres of farmland, currently sporting rows of dried feed corn stalks awaiting harvest.  There are woods to the south and an old grain silo to the northwest.  Otherwise, we have a clear unobstructed view of the western horizon.  There is a small rise on our property where we often sit and watch the sunsets or storms rolling in and discuss where we've been and where we'd like to go.  We call this the "thinking spot".  When I'm in...

Are you a workplace bully?

Posted on June 10, 2016 at 7:10 PM

In my never ending attempt to stay informed with the latest business trends, I am subscribed to several email newsletters.  It can get cumbersome, especially if I don't get through them all in a day.  Eventually you learn which ones to read more in depth and which you can just skim over.  HR.com really has some high quality articles in their newsletters.  I particularly like the "Personal Excellence" and the "Legal and Compliance" newsletters.  Over the last few month...

Hobby Farmers Anonymous-check with your insurer first!

Posted on June 2, 2016 at 6:50 PM

I will do my best to stick to the facts alone in this post, but I admit it will be difficult. Before you decide for certain what type of animals to obtain to begin your hobby farm, I HIGHLY recommend you contact your insurance agent. We started with honeybees in 2011 and in 2014 expanded with two bunnies and three Nigerian Dwarf doe goats. We did not even consider checking with our insurance agent regarding our policy and its stipulations. At this point, we were still in co...

Is your business a "hobby"?

Posted on May 17, 2016 at 5:10 AM

Recently, TIGTA – The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration released its audit report of the IRS’s methods of addressing taxpayers who take business tax deductions for activities not engaged in for profit. TIGTA found that the IRS can improve its methods for identifying high-income taxpayers who may be offsetting their income with “hobby losses” from unprofitable business activity.

For those who are not familiar, the primary issue is exp...

Lesson Seven

Sacrifice - Be willing to do what no one else wants to do, difficulty lasts for a season but

His blessings linger

For the majority of my berry picking adventures, I have been alone. My husband

participated in the process once early on, but honestly I prefer the solitude. Even though the

task is difficult, I am comforted by the knowledge that I hav...
